Need for Speed? This Porsche and RUF Combo Is Unforgettable

The Excitement of the Pebble Beach Auctions
Porsche enthusiasts are known for their deep passion and dedication to the brand. These collectors and fans follow every detail of Porsche vehicles with an almost obsessive zeal, drawn in by the brand's rich heritage, speed, and exceptional performance. It’s no surprise, then, that when Gooding Christie’s announced the upcoming sale of two of the world’s most prestigious Porsche and RUF models, the automotive world was buzzing with excitement.
The Gooding Christie’s Pebble Beach Auctions are set to take place on August 15th and 16th, and registration is now open to the public. Whether you're a seasoned collector or just beginning your journey into high-end automotive auctions, this is a rare opportunity to witness some of the most iconic vehicles ever produced.
Meet the 2021 RUF CTR Anniversary
One of the standout vehicles in this year's auction is the 2021 RUF CTR Anniversary, estimated to fetch between $3,000,000 and $4,000,000. For those unfamiliar with RUF, it's a company renowned for modifying and building hyper-custom Porsche-based automobiles. Their vehicles are among the rarest, highest-performing, and most bespoke cars in the world.
The RUF CTR Anniversary was first unveiled at the 2017 Geneva Motor Show and was built from scratch, not based on any existing 911 model. RUF secured the rights from Porsche to replicate the exterior design of a 1980s-era 911, resulting in a stunning design that pays homage to the past while embracing modern engineering. This car features a carbon fiber monocoque chassis, making it both lightweight and extremely rigid—ideal for racing performance.
The RUF CTR Anniversary was created to commemorate the 30th anniversary of the original CTR, which was once recognized as the world's fastest production car by Road & Track. The legacy of the CTR continues to influence both car engineering and the market. At the Amelia Island Auctions, a similar model sold for an impressive $6,055,000, showcasing the enduring appeal of these vehicles.
Inside, the car houses a 3.6-liter twin-turbocharged flat-six engine producing 710 horsepower at 6,750 rpm. It can accelerate from 0-60 mph in just 3.5 seconds, reach 0-124 mph in under nine seconds, and achieve a top speed of 224 mph. This power is enhanced by twin turbochargers, Bosch DME Motronic Fuel Management, a seven-speed manual transaxle, and a limited-slip differential.
Finished in green with brown leather interiors and fewer than 500 miles on the odometer, this car is a dream for anyone who craves speed and exclusivity.
The 2017 Porsche 911 RSR-17
As if the RUF CTR Anniversary wasn't enough, the auction also features the 2017 Porsche 911 RSR-17, estimated to sell for between $3,000,000 and $5,000,000. This vehicle represents a significant milestone in Porsche history, embodying years of engineering innovation.
Based on the 1973 911 Carrera RSR, the RSR-17 retains some of the classic 70s elements but introduces groundbreaking changes in design and performance. Unlike traditional 911 models, the RSR-17 features a mid-engine configuration, a departure from the rear-engine layout that had been standard for decades. Engineers moved the flat-six engine in front of the rear axle, a design choice not seen since the GT1 in the 90s.
This change sparked considerable interest and speculation within the automotive community. To ensure reliability, the prototypes underwent 22,000 miles of testing—more than any previous Porsche GT race car.
Powered by a 3,996 CC DOHC Type M97/80 flat-six-cylinder engine with direct fuel injection, the RSR-17 proved its mettle by finishing second in the GTLM class at the 24 Hours of Daytona in 2017 and achieving numerous class wins across major races like Sebring, Petit Le Mans, Le Mans, Long Beach, and Watkins Glen.
The RSR-17 now sports the iconic Coca-Cola livery, a nostalgic nod to the 935-962 era, making it a true "if-you-know-you-know" gem. Porsche fans will be eagerly anticipating its return to the track.
