The Rise of Overlanding and the Evolution of Adventure Vehicles

Over the past few years, overlanding has become a global phenomenon, transforming how people experience the outdoors. This trend has led to a surge in the development of wild adventure vehicles, ranging from pop-top trailers equipped with awnings and even pizza ovens to full-sized RVs designed for off-grid living. As the demand for these vehicles has grown, so too have the features and upgrades that define them. From heavy-duty winches and lifted suspension systems to massive knobby tires, the industry has seen a significant shift toward more robust and capable equipment. Additionally, solar panels and onboard battery power have become essential components, offering a level of self-sufficiency that was once unthinkable. Even digital touchscreen controls, heated showers, aluminum and carbon-fiber construction, and fine wood accents are now standard in many off-road campers, all aimed at enhancing the luxury lifestyle.

No longer do adventurers have to endure the discomfort of sleeping on a leaky air mattress or skipping hot showers while relying on a small camp stove. Instead, modern off-road trailers and campers provide the comforts of home, allowing individuals to escape city life without sacrificing their quality of life. This evolution has opened up new possibilities for exploration, enabling travelers to venture further into the wilderness with confidence and comfort.

The only remaining decisions are how much to invest in customizing a dream off-road camper or RV and where to go next on the journey of a lifetime.

Top Off-Road Campers and Trailers of 2025

Best Off-Road Camper Overall: Krug Bedrock XT2

Austrian camper module manufacturer Krug has made a bold entry into the American overlanding market with the Bedrock XT2, developed in partnership with Arctic Trucks in Wyoming. The rig starts with a Ford F-550 converted into a three-axle, six-wheel vehicle, each fitted with 42-inch Continental tires. The chassis is equipped with eight-link air suspension controlled by an interior touchscreen, which allows drivers to adjust the ride for smoother or firmer handling. It also enables leveling the living module at the campsite or inflating the massive tires easily.

Krug’s unique mounting system allows the F-550 ladder frame and camper module to move independently beneath the module, using a V-shaped groove and subframe to reduce wear and tear. The interior offers ample space for anyone up to 6'5" tall to stand comfortably, despite the absence of a pop-top roof, which would otherwise increase wind noise and reduce insulation. The cabin features clever storage solutions, light wood panels for the convertible dining table and bed setup, and a 1,400-watt solar panel system that powers a 1,980-amp-hour lithium-ion battery pack. Remote access is available via Starlink Mini and a digital touchscreen control panel.

Best Large Off-Road Trailer: Bruder EXP-8

Bruder’s EXP-8 takes off-road trailer living to a new level. Weighing approximately 6,172 pounds, it rides on dual axles with 33-inch tires and features an air suspension system with dual remote-reservoir shocks at each wheel. This setup provides three times as much usable wheel travel as its competitors, ensuring a smooth ride over challenging terrain. A built-in winch and recovery points add to the rig’s versatility, making it ideal for off-road adventures.

Inside, the EXP-8 can sleep up to five people, with a 48-volt electrical system supporting a 1,680-watt solar setup and a 20-kilowatt-hour battery. The living quarters are fully equipped with a queen bed, full kitchen, diesel heater, air conditioning, and even an optional washer/dryer. The shower includes a door on both sides for easy access when near the beach or during other outdoor activities.

Best Pickup-Based Off-Road Camper: 27North Trekker

The Trekker from 27North builds on the success of the company’s original Ascender adventure rig. Starting with a Ram 5500, it features a 6.7L Cummins turbodiesel engine rated for 34,000 pounds of towing capacity. 27North adds a four-inch lift and 40-inch tires to support a carbon-composite camper module with aluminum interior walls and a weatherproof floor, designed for extreme environments ranging from -25 to 125 degrees. Rugged bumpers, skid plates, rock sliders, and a winch enhance its off-road capabilities, while the interior features a full king-size bed above the truck’s cab.

Everything on the Trekker is oversized, including a 3,000-watt inverter for solar, three 310-Ah batteries, 50 gallons of fresh water, 360-degree exterior lighting, and a Bluetooth-controlled retractable awning.

Best Off-Road Camper Van: Rogue Vans Legends Rally

Not every adventure requires a heavy-duty pickup, and the popularity of Mercedes-Benz Sprinter vans among overlanders reflects this. Rogue Vans’ Legends Rally stands out with a 6.3-inch lift, 33-inch tires, and flared fenders. The blue pine wood grain interior creates a welcoming space for extended stays, featuring a convertible bench-bed, tiled shower, and portable cooktop in the kitchen. Power comes from 500 watts of solar and an optional 47-gallon fuel tank. The van also includes AC, heat, and a fan for comfort, along with Starlink connectivity for staying connected even in remote locations.

Best Off-Road Camper Pop-Up: Rossmönster Baja Plus

The Baja Plus from Colorado-based Rossmönster is a luxurious pop-up camper that costs nearly half a million dollars but justifies its price with an impressive feature list. Starting as a Class 5 Ram pickup, it receives a cab pass-through, super singles, and a pop-top camper with an 80-inch ceiling. Teak wood and brilliant lighting keep the interior airy, while in-floor heating and composting toilets add convenience. The Baja Plus is equipped with upgraded suspension, wheels, and tires, plus MaxTrax mounting locations and a 20,000-pound Warn winch. A 1,620-amp-hour LFP battery powered by 760 watts of solar ensures reliable power, and the interior can sleep up to six people comfortably.

Best Small Off-Road Trailer: Mammoth Overland TL Genesis Edition

Mammoth Overland’s TL Genesis Edition trailer lives up to its name with a tall and upright interior that allows anyone short of an NBA player to walk inside. The cabin features a kitchen and on-demand hot water powered by two 100-watt solar panels and a 400-amp-hour lithium-ion battery, plus a king-size mattress and a modular bunk bed/couch. Riding on 5,200-pound-rated independent suspension from Timbren and 33-inch BFGoodrich all-terrain tires, the first run of TL trailers includes an indoor-outdoor passthrough pantry, plumbing for propane, and an indoor shower.

Additional off-road gear includes rock sliders, a high-lift jack, and an articulating hitch for cruising over rough trails without concern of tipping over. The exterior offers customization options, such as mounting for MOLLE panels, Rotopax cans, a ladder to access the roof, and a rear hitch receiver for hauling mountain bikes.

Best Off-Road Teardrop Trailer: Escapod Topo2 MTB

Escapod’s Topo2 MTB trailer is a minimalist, modernized teardrop design tailored for mountain bikers. Its single-piece fiberglass construction keeps the weight low, yet it still manages a year-round R9 insulation rating. The Topo2 MTB rides higher than most with 23 inches of ground clearance thanks to Freeride independent suspension and clearance for 33-inch General Grabber all-terrain tires.

The galley features a sink, storage for a Yeti cooler, plenty of drawers, and an integrated bicycle tool kit by Feedback Sports mounted directly into the cabinetry, including chain breakers and crankset wrenches. The galley is accessed by swinging out the Kuat Piston Ion bike rack, which can haul two 80-pound e-bikes. Roof racks allow for additional storage, and a retractable awning provides shade after a tough day in the saddle. An outdoor shower is also included for rinsing off trail grime.
