More disruption for Surrey's 'prettiest town centre' as 10 nights of road closures confirmed
There is more disruption planned for Farnham’s roads, as a huge town centre improvement continues.
Since February 2025 there have been considerable roadworks in the area as Surrey County Council tries to transform the town for pedestrians and motorists alike. Once the project is finished off, in 2027, everything from the road layout, to the bus stations will be different.
With such a lot happening, the work is being completed in stages. Currently, the focus is on
- The animal once extinct in England making a return to a Surrey river
- Teenager dies in Surrey village crash after car collides with tree
Introducing a new layout at the junction of Longbridge, Union Road and Victoria Road. This began in May and is expected to last until mid-August.
As well as being able to access and exit Waggon Yard car park without needing to travel around the gyratory, the completed junction will have traffic lights linked to the others in the town centre, improved pedestrian crossings as well as new planting, paving and cycle stands.
However, this means that a series of overnight closures have begun. From Monday, August 4 to Friday, August 8 and then from Monday, August 11 to Friday, August 15 there will be a series of travel restrictions from 8.30pm until 6am.

During this time there will be no vehicle access to Waggon Yard and Central car parks, although people will be able to drive out. There will also be no road access to Lower, Middle or Upper Church Lanes, Vicarage Lane, Downing Street and Victoria Road. Again people will be able to drive out.
The only expectation will be drivers accessing their properties as usual on Union Road. Vehicles may not be able to access or exit St Andrews Court on Downing Street, and the Old Court House on Union Road, between 8.30pm and 6am on specific nights during this period. The site team will liaise with the affected residents and businesses accordingly.
Works are also taking place during the day on weekdays and Saturday mornings. During this time the work at the junction will be open, however the right hand lane on Union Road will be closed and lanes will be narrowed at the Longbridge junction.
There will be two temporary pedestrian crossings. There will be one on Union Road and one on Longbridge, as the crossing point at Longbridge junction will not be available. The bus stop on Union Road will also be suspended.

The Next Phase:
Work on the next phase (Downing Street and West Street) has already started and is set to last until November.
From August 18:
Downing Street will close to through-traffic north of Lower Church Lane. Vehicular access will be maintained for residents, deliveries and emergencies. Pedestrian access will be maintained at all times. This semi-pedestrianisation is a temporary change and the road will reopen to traffic on 1 November for the pre-Christmas period. .
The lower section of Downing Street (between Longbridge junction and Lower Church Lane) will open to two-way traffic.
