New Blackout License Plates Arrive in North Dakota

North Dakota is known for its unique blue sky and plains license plate, which has been a staple across the state. However, starting August 1, residents will have access to a new style of license plate that adds some flair and personality to their vehicles.

Whether you're riding on two wheels or four, many people enjoy customizing their vehicles to reflect their individuality. Now, with the introduction of blackout license plates, there's an even more distinctive way to make your ride stand out.

Brad Schaffer, director of Driver and Vehicle Services with the North Dakota Department of Transportation (NDDOT), shared details about the new plates. “We will have a new license plate, a blackout license plate, that will be available to the public,” he said. “It’s going to be really nice, really cool looking, and it is a part of this last legislative session, Senate Bill 2133 that allows us to make this new license plate.”

Blackout license plates are gaining popularity nationwide, and North Dakota is joining the trend. “A couple other states around the country are doing this and they have been very popular,” Schaffer explained. “In Minnesota, they sold over 250,000 in their first year. In Iowa, it was their most popular license plate. So one of the residents in North Dakota reached out to one of their legislators and asked if they could bring this bill forward, and Senator Roers did out of Fargo, and it passed. We’re really excited to see them out on the road here very, very soon.”

These plates are optional, but the DOT has a full inventory ready for those interested. “If they do want the license plate, starting August 1st, it will be available. There will be an additional $25 fee for a standard plate. And if you want to personalize that plate, it will be another $25,” Schaffer continued. “So if it’s a personalized black plate, it will be $50 plus your registration fees. And that is a fee yearly you will pay.”

One common question is where the extra revenue from these plates is going. According to Schaffer, the funds will directly benefit North Dakota’s roads. “We’re expecting in the next four years, to generate about $6.7 million in additional revenue. That goes directly to the roads,” he said. “That goes to the fund that does all the road construction and things like that. So that’s a good thing — the highway tax distribution fund.”

The new blackout license plates offer a win-win situation, allowing drivers to express their style while contributing to road improvements. If you're interested in obtaining one, you can visit any motor vehicle office in the state. You can walk out with a standard issued blackout plate the same day. For personalized plates, you can fill out a form online, and expect it to arrive in the mail within four to eight weeks.

With the introduction of these plates, North Dakota continues to provide innovative ways for residents to showcase their individuality while supporting important infrastructure projects. Whether you're looking for a stylish addition to your vehicle or a way to contribute to the community, the new blackout license plates are a great option.
